  • Yield: Makes approximately 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp gel-based red food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup red velvet cake crumbs (for filling)
  • 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted (for consistency)
  • 12 tbsp red food coloring (for a glossy red hue)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 34 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 23 tbsp milk (to achieve desired consistency)
  • A few drops of ivory or peach food coloring (for pale skin-tone effect)
  • Candy fangs or small dots of vegan gelatin (for puncture marks)
  • Red syrup or edible red gel (for “blood” drips)
  • Straws (not edible)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla and red food coloring.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry mix to the wet ingredients alternating with buttermilk until just combined.
  4. Stir in baking soda mixed with vinegar. Pour batter into muffin tins about two-thirds full and bake for 18-20 minutes.
  5. Let cupcakes cool before hollowing out centers using a small knife or cupcake corer. Fill with creamy mixture made from cake crumbs, sweetened condensed milk, melted butter, and red food coloring.
  6. Beat softened butter with powdered sugar until creamy for frosting; add milk for desired consistency.
  7. Frost cooled cupcakes and decorate with candy fangs and edible gel to create bite marks.
