Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjustable)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the onions into bite-sized petals.
  2. Set up three bowls: one with flour mixed with paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and salt; one with buttermilk; and the last with panko breadcrumbs.
  3. Coat each onion petal in the flour mixture, then dip in buttermilk, followed by coating in panko.
  4. Heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep fryer or large pot.
  5. Fry the coated onion petals in batches until golden brown and crispy (about 2–3 minutes each). Drain on paper towels.
  6. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
